    HOPE

    6/16/2018 at 1:13 PM

I hope it is true. It may just be a rumor like the unicorn.

Maybe they are after out westman customers heading south each month?. I do know with on going concern though that makes then not want to come. is most local cosco customers are served by Wpg and Regina. All a store here would gain is those customers increased buying frequency and a few new. Not worth simply having a store that steals from its own in those cities. Is the increased sales in a dieing brick and motor industry worth the extra profit? Short term maybe but we will see in ten years.

Costco rep making the rounds around town again? Seems every year or two now they're out asking about peoples interest in a "Costco in your area".

    Costco

Well I've been hearing from different people that Costco is coming to Brandon for over 20 years. One guy I talked to about 8 years ago said construction was going to start right away and the company he works for got hired to do work, yet 8 years later, where's Costco?

    Research

    6/16/2018 at 7:20 PM

Just doing a bit of checking it seems costco likes to hace at least 200,000 population to draw on to open a store, there are three stores in the US that are in centres smaller than 60,000, but just checking it seems that the surrounding areas of these stores does bring the population up to the number they are looking for.
Costco is a high volume, low margin idea, they may get some breaks on purchases, but it is still an idea of high volume of customers that plays a big part in opening a store.
Should have maybe taken a more specific look at Canadian operations, numbers might be a bit smaller. Myself I can't see it happening, not enough population.

Wouldn’t rule it out but imagine could still live a happy life if it never happened.

Medicine Hat is the classic example. Trading area looks to be 175,000 going by the “invest Medicine Hat”
Site. Econ Development Brandon has us at 180,000. The thing I can’t quite get past is that the conceptual plan for the development South of town has the outline of an anchor tenant that very much resembles the distinctive outline that a lot of Canadian Costco’s have. That doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a commitment and could simply mean that somebody wants them there, but it’s enough to keep the rumour mill going Costco in Brandon south, eBrandon discussion (5)

I really dont't care if we see a Costco here.

    6/16/2018 at 10:23 PM

We go to Winnipeg and my wife wants to make a stop at Costco every time. We pay $63 per year to join the cult and we go probably 7-10 times per year and buy the same 15 items every time. If we had one here the $250 bill 7 -10 times per year would probably be 50 times per year and because it was so easy to purchase in bulk our consumption would increase. Not to mention some people have serial shopping tendencies.

I don't mind Costco the times I have been. But I do have a bit of a problem having to pay money (buy a membership) to spend my money, so someone else can have my money.

I work hard to earn my money. Why do I need to spend my money so I can spend it?

I am hoping you guys one day get your Costco but for me it does not really matter.

    Costco

    6/17/2018 at 10:11 AM

IF the Brandon south annexation gets approved by Cornwallis and the province, there is a chance we will get one when development gets underway. Now by 2020, that probably is too soon, but who knows.

If you look at the plans that VBJ has put out to the public for the south, one building looks similar to Costco and their sq.ft for that building falls into Costco spec. Also there is a gas station in the same vicinity. Again similar to the newer Costco's.

Now I am not 100% sure, if Costco likes to lease their buildings vs owning it and possibly owning the land as well.

IMO it is time that Brandon gets a Costco. We have enough population in Brandon and surrounding areas including North Dakota and Sask. The people that work at Costco in Winnipeg won't say much and same goes with head office, whether you call or e-mail them. You pretty much get the same answer everytime, and their email is pretty generic as well.

What I dont understand is that there are LOTS of people that are against having a Costco open up in Brandon.

For those that oppose.. why wouldn't you want one? and giving a reason of buy local.. just a thought is that Costco sell only certain number items vs a grocery store that sells probably double or even triple the items

I do not shop at Costco. BUT by the sounds of it, you can spend $70 to save well over $500 plus dollars, depending on how often and how much you spend. To me, it sounds worth buying the membership.

    It's what makes COSTCO unique..

You know how you go to the store and buy a widget for $9, because that's more or less what they cost everywhere...then one day you find out that the store only pays $1 for the widgets and you get angry because you think $8 is way to much profit to be charging...then you go to Costco and that widget is $1.15 and you can't figure out why...

Well Costco says "We will ONLY charge 15% over our cost on EVERYTHING (which is why some things are amazing deals and some are just a little better than average). Out of that 15% mark up they pay their overhead. So how do they make a profit? Memberships.

That's why they have guys checking you when you come in and if they see your Mom or friend hand you a bag of almonds to pay for with your membership they'll ask to see hers and if she doesn't have one all kind of awkwardness ensues because they make almost their entire profit from memberships.

I do agree with Costco's logic...and if you'll almost find that you save the entire cost of the membership after your first GOOD shop. We usually drop $500-$750 with every visit and with the Executive membership and the rebate we usually get a cheque for $80-$125 every year so it basically pays for the card anyway.

I am not personally against it but I don't find it useful for me, (Plus of course the membership fee still urks me.)

I was in one with family last month. I thought oh I should get some pop for my visit out there. Well I could not get 12 cans. I could get 32 though.

The large quantities make no sense for a lot of people. For families, it makes sense no doubt.

yeah pop.. I don't even buy because if it's not on sale at Costco then it is expensive. You can buy it cheaper at other grocery stores when it is on sale.

But yes I agree for families, it is a very good store to buy in bulk.

We have a large-ish family, and I get to Costco occasionally with my mom (who lives in Winnipg and shops there regularily).

It's not cheaper. It really isn't. Not for the stuff I buy, anyway. I'm a meticulous per-unit shopper, and it's pretty much on par with most things I can buy locally, either regular price or on sale. But it's not "the deal" the so many Costco addicts make it out to be. [I must note here that the exception to that is cheese. For whatever reason cheese is soooo much cheaper there. I will go there just for cheese.]

Are there deals? Sure. But I find those are exceptional or on-off things instead of the day-to-day things that most people would buy.

The only real attraction to me is that Costco has a variety that isn't available elsewhere. Certain brands you can't find anywhere else, or products unique to Costco. That's really the only thing that might entice me to buy a membership should one open up locally.

My understanding is that a store is part of the annexation plans. So it would be dependent on that all going through. But they are one of the major retailers set to use the site pending all goes as planned.

Oh yes. For sure you need to know your prices when shopping at Costco.

One thing they have that I really do like is a huge deli pizza that they make there. It is about $10 and very good.

If costco comes I probably wouldn't buy a membership. I would continue to piggy back off someone that has one. Like people said you need to know your pricing. About all I buy is cooking spray, dishwasher pellets, and a couple other things. I have noticed after purchasing items without even thinking they have been expired or very close to expiring and with a jumbo size I couldn't use it all by the expiration date. Toilet paper and consumables like that are cheaper when they go on sale at the local stores. Between my air miles and points card I make a pretty good return on spending. Plus sure the large packs of meat are alright but I hate freezing stuff.
